The carb on my car is I think a 1934 model (it came from a scrapped 75) not as fitted new which was a Type U. There is an ongoing problem in that this model has a small starter carb on the side mounted above the float level. When you pull the "Starter" out a brass cone pulls off it's seat and the choke suction pulls extra fuel up to provide a rich starter mix. When you push the Starter back the cone doesn't always seat correctly, allowing too much fuel to continue to be pulled through. Does anyone know if spare starter carbs are available (unlikely) or do I find a watchmaker to re-surface cone and mazac seating?

Starter carb problem on Zenith VEG

Hi Garth, I've recently had a similar problem on my 95 with a 48 V12 carb. On my carb the spindle that the cone attaches to is operated by a fork which is worked by a rod which both pulls and pushes the cone off and on to it's seat. It went through a fit of not quite reseating after starting, thus always running rich. I took it all apart and cleaned it and just lightly polished the cone and now it works much better but I still have to be positive in returning the choke to the off position to make sure it seats to stop the petrol flow. I'm not sure this helps you, but at least you can take comfort in knowing that you are not alone! James.

Hi James, my carb has a (slightly) flexible connection between cone and the stop which engages with the fork and relies on a return spring to ensure seating, it sounds as if your model has a more positive link, but then there is more petrol at risk of going through to waste with a 3 litre on a 48 choke!
Lapping the cone in has helped and I have found a firm who will reseat it, using a dental product to overcome the problems of early mazac, I shall use the car until the end of summer and let you know how the repair goes.
PS trying to find why a man of my years is still only a Junior Member.
