What are the recommended 18 mm plugs for our road going Talbots? When I bought my 95 in 1981, it was fitted with Champion UK 10's, and I have used these ever since in all my Talbots, not the same set, of course! U.K. 10's are now difficult to find and I have heard that others use an NGK plug, but I have heard poor reports of some of these plugs. So what is the one to use these days? James.

I am puzzled! Guy you said that your problem was spluttering until hot. This implies to me that the plug was not getting hot enough during the warm up phase and was fouling and this cleared when the engine was hot. Changing to the AB7 is a harder plug that runs cooler. The term colder plug and hotter plug refers to how fast or slow the plugs transfers the heat from the tip. A colder plug transfers heat faster while a hotter plug is slower. Where am I going wrong?

I had a lot of problems earlier this year following a visit to a rolling road. I had a 40 mile drive home after he had reduced the size of the main jet. The following week I took the car for an MOT, after 5 miles it started spitting back very badly and was running far too weak. I then spent a couple of months trying to sort it, changing the economy, main and compensator jets following Fop's advice. I blew all the fuel lines through, changed the in line filter and cleaned a surprising amount of muck in the carb bowl filter. The plugs were white/light grey on the electrodes but are now dark brown. A week before the Marches tour it conked out on a test run. I changed the condensor and one set of points that were rather blue. It then ran perfectly on the Marches tour apart from the slight fluffing until hot. I think it's now a little rich. The AB7s as you say are a colder plug that transfers the heat more quickly. All I know is that Fop recommended the AB7s and the car is now running fine!

I know of two other people who have had trouble with NGK plugs, one used A6's, the other I don't know. In 38 years of driving Talbots I have never had the slightest problem with plugs and I have always used Champion UK 10, which sadly are no longer available. With further research, believe they are superseded by D9's All this chatter about hot and cold, hard and soft, fluffy until it gets warm, is a dire warning to me to keep well clear of any NGK and try the D9. Unless any one else has any recommendations.

Is it possible to get a sharp close up of the strap electrode - I am interested in the markings as you progress from the tip to the base as this can reveal information on the heat range match. Looking at NGK AB6 plugs it seems that the Champion equivalent are the D16 and the D14 whereas the Champion equivalent for the NGK AB7 is the D9.
