Dick,
Thanks for the photo. It is indeed clearer. In my opinion you can see a nice demarcation just before the strap bends over which tells me that the heat rating of your plug is spot on.

This might explain some of the issues seen if it is true. Perhaps need to find a source is NOS pre 1975 plugs!

In the sixty's our local garage had a plug blasting machine that I believe was made by Champion, so how does that square with the Green spark company advice not to blast plugs?

I think the point is that the early plugs with glazed insulator were ok to sandblast. The latter plugs (unglazed) seems hold into the surface some of the contaminants resulting from wetted plugs and this cannot be effectively removed by the blasting to restore long term reliability.
