Original construction details of the silencer and tail pipe

I am familiar with the illustrations in the various parts list. I note that the tailpipe inserts some considerable distance into the silence and has a number of small holes. It is unclear whether the end of the pipe within the silencer has the ends totally sealed or whether there is a hole in the middle.
1. Can anyone tell me how many holes there were in the side of the tube, what the size of them are and whether they extend all the way around or only over half the circumference.
2. What are the details of the end of the tube by these holes - Is there an end plate and did it have a hole in the centre and if so what diameter?
3. Is there a difference in the internal tubes and baffles between the different models? Are there any drawings available?
4. Is there a difference in the length and diameter of the silencer body between different models?

My silencer came from Ian polson and has 3 bolt flanges on each end, so the tail pipe is also flanged to attach to the silencer, so no pipe within the silencer. You would have to ask ian if his silencer fits all models

I have already spoken with Ian. The type and construction is quite different to the original Talbot design. His is a simple straight through construction of an inner perforated tube surrounded by a fibrous absorber. Like a very long 'cherry bomb'! I am not clear whether it is glass fibre or stainless steel fibre. The Talbot silencer has multiple chambers and works on a different principle with the likelyhood of multiple sound reflections giving rise to noise cancelling like many modern car OEM systems.

Has anyone ever taken apart an original exhaust silencer for any Talbot?

Hi Gordon,

A few years ago Foppe made silencers for both myself and Guy, for our respective 90's which we were building simultaneously and I understood at that time he had taken apart an original silencer and reproduced it, but in stainless. Foppe might be the man to ask.

My new silencer is straight through and has what looks like stainless steel fibre. It came from ISP. I wish that the in and out pipes would slip inside the silencer, it would make getting the pipes the right length prior to welding on the flanges a lot easier.
