75 Assistance

I have tried unsuccessfully since the end of last year to get my 75 running again. I am unable to get fuel to the carb, having replaced the fuel filter the manual fuel primer looked in need of a service and I have duly got all of the components back together but remain unable to get it started. I had some good advice from Ian Potts but the car remains starved of fuel. Is there anyone in the Southampton area who can help unravel the issue and get me back on the road.

Hi Bob. sounds like you still have a problem with the mechanical pump. Why not put an electric pump on? I got one from Foppe - it was about £50 from memory

Vinnie Rawlings used to say that the OEM fuel pumps on Talbots have become increasingly temperamental partly because they are made of Mazak which becomes very brittle with age but it also has a tendency to expand as it gets old. This is the main reason the hand controls on the steering column seize up because the castings are Mazak. As Guy suggests you can put an electric one in or I understand there is a more modern mechanical one which looks similar to the original. I think Foppe D'Hane can probably advise you on either option.
I'm thinking of going electric on my 75 simply for reliability, keeping the old one in place so it looks right under the bonnet but subtly by-passing it.
