  • Lubrication of leaf springs

When the springs were encased in leather gaiters they often had greasing nipples. In this case what is the preferred lubricant? I believe on the Rolls Royce they were lubricated by oil every 2 weeks by the central lubrication system. Any advice would be most welcome.

I use Penrite semi lube and steering box lube in all my oilers which seems to be quite effective

Weren't they originally lubricated by the Talbots engine oil via the centralised lubrication system. I also put
Penrites semi grease in my steering box....no leaks, but I did replace the seals and converted the throttle and choke control spindles to modern lip seals.

I dismantled my springs, polished the leaves, linished out the wear steps and painted each leaf with graphite grease. This was the start of my losing ride height. Before the leaves were almost fused together with rust and crud, so did not slide against each other. Now that they can the difference in the 'springyness' is remarkable. I've also heard that copper grease is good.

          Dick,
Thanks for your information. The central lubrication system did not come in till after the 14/45. With gaiters I prefer to use oil for maximum penetration.

When I built up my 90, I took all the springs apart as you did Dick, polished them and linished out the wear and then coated them in graphite grease mixed with thick oil
